An unconference is a participant-guided experience that harnesses the unstructured conversations people usually have between conference sessions into the conference itself. Unlike most conferences where talking heads and group leaders decide what is important, unconferences are organized by the crowd. Unconferences are about sharing the knowledge and passion we have for our profession and taking what we learn into the world to make a difference. Everyone has something to share. Digital literacy is an essential 21st century skill set. Digital literacy requires strong reading and writing skills and includes the ability to use technology effectively, understand digital content, and communicate with digital tools. Librarians, educators, researchers, and policy makers are addressing a broad range of issues, including equity of access and digital inclusion, emerging educational curricula and training modules, and new strategies for public engagement. Members of ALA’s Committee on Literacy and ALA’s  Digital Literacy Task Force will share current findings, ongoing initiatives, promising practices, and next steps.

The ACRL Research Planning and Review Committee is responsible for creating and updating a continuous and dynamic environmental scan for the association that encompasses trends in academic librarianship, higher education, and the broader environment, e.g., economic, demographic, political; providing an annual environmental scan "snapshot." The Committee also is responsible for identifying the ACRL "Top 10 Trends" for release every two years. In order to identify the trends the Committee members review the literature, attend conferences, and contact experts who are familiar with current trends in higher education. This Discussion Forum will provide an opportunity for ACRL members to meet and discuss the trends and issues facing academic libraries and higher education. Three leaders in academic librarianship will be the catalysts for this discussion: Martin Halbert, Dean of Libraries at University of North Texas; Joan Lippincott, Associate Director of Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), and Mark Puente, Director of Diversity and Leadership Programs, ARL. The Discussion Forum will be moderated by Lynn Silipigni Connaway, Ph.D., Chair, ACRL Research Planning and Review Committee.
